Lize Spit

Lize Spit, born in 1988, is one of the most influential contemporary Belgian authors writing in Dutch. She rose to literary prominence with her debut novel Het smelt (The Melting) in 2016, a critically acclaimed bestseller that sold hundreds of thousands of copies, was translated into numerous languages, and earned several prestigious literary awards. The novel's international success established Spit as a major new voice in European literature.

Raised in the Antwerp Kempen region and based in Brussels, Spit studied screen writing at RITCS (Royal Institute for Theatre, Cinema and Sound). Her writing is renowned for its psychological depth, emotional intensity, and unflinching exploration of themes such as identity, trauma, family relationships, and resilience.

Following her breakthrough debut, Spit published Ik ben er niet (I'm Not Here), further confirming her reputation as one of the strongest literary voices of her generation. In 2023, she was selected to write the prestigious Dutch Book Week novella De eerlijke vinder, reaching an exceptionally broad readership across the Netherlands and Belgium.

Beyond her work as a novelist, Spit is a columnist and guest lecturer in creative writing. Her impact on contemporary literature and her strong connection to Brussels led to her receiving an honorary doctorate from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Université libre de Bruxelles in 2025. Through her compelling storytelling and sharp social insight, Lize Spit has become one of Belgium's most celebrated and internationally recognized literary figures.
